Piecemakers
One of our pet projects is making quilts for the children who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House here in the medical center. Over the years we have donated over seven hundred quilts to this facility and have also made pillowcases for travel pillows which were given to the children.
The Gathering gives a quilt ,which has been made by our quilters,to celebrate the birthdays in their groups . We have contributed to the Linus and Binkie Projects too. We also made thirteen quilts and had them blessed for the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton. Recently, Betty Epps was recognized for the quilt she made for a wounded soldier recovering at Brook Army Medical Center.
“The Piecemakers” opportunity quilts, made for the past ten EggStravaganza's, have made $14,000.00 that has been contributed to KUMC. Members of our group have contributed a number of quilted items to Fall Fair and to EggStravaganza since 1996 for Silent Auction items. We made a quilt which was raffled off at a golf tournament with the proceeds going for cancer research.
For the past two years, a Block of the Month quilt has been planned out by a member in the group, and those quilters ,who chose to participate, enjoy the wonderful quilts these blocks produce. Presently, we are finishing a Star Sampler. The next quilt will be a Road Trip utilizing blocks named after states.
Two times a year, usually in May and November, we go on Quilt Retreat. On our retreats we learn new techniques, refresh our skills and have wonderful fellowship.
Our group is open to anyone who wants to learn to quilt, polish their skills, and share fellowship with a wonderful bunch of quilters. In the beginning none of us could foresee the wide range of possibilities for this group. Membership at Klein is not a requirement for belonging to the group. It might be said that “The Piecemakers” is a group of women who have stitched their lives together in patches that make a cover which can serve all.
